Hair on Hide Products Care & FAQs
Cowhide accessories are natural and they can be affected by the environment, how they are being handled and cared for.
Over the years, I found out that, with cowhide products, there are very little things to be dealing with.
And if this is the case, those matters are very minor. Please read further down my tips on hair on hide's handling and general care.
1. Your hide rug may arrive folded (if bigger than 1.5m) and not rolled. What to do next?
Open the parcel on the day you received it and unfold the rug. Roll the rug carefully in the width or length direction (so you have a "roll" It will allow the rug to shape the rug again. Before to install the rug (an hour before, roughly) please roll it the other way around (hair on hide on the OUTSIDE not inside anymore) This will allow the rug to sit better without having corner to curl up. (and it brings me to point number 2 below :-)
2. Curled Corners
Curling happens because the corners of the rug are usually thinner than most part of it. As it is the same for all cowhide rugs, it does not mean that you’ve bought a poor quality one when you experience this!
-
If your cowhide rug still does not have this, you better avoid it by making sure that you keep it away from too much heat. Do not put it under direct sunlight either. On the other hand if your precious hide is already showing signs of curling, you may spray some water on the back part of the rug then massage the rug. Fold it back and put some heavy books for a day or two. The edges should straighten.
3. Dirt & Stain
Having dirt and stain on your carpet is the most common situation your rug can get into. After a night of party or dinner, it is inevitable for you or your guest to spill some wine or food on them, which, of course can ruin the look of the rug.
-
Mix 5% white vinegar and 95% water in a spray bottle. Working in small areas at a time, lightly spray the rug with the solution. Then wipe that area with a soft sponge. Dry the rug immediately with a clean, dry rag. This process will “freshen up” a leather rug that isn’t too much stained. Note the vinegar helps balance the pH and neutralize odours. It also kills any bacteria.
-
On the other hand, for more important dirt, you can just ask someone to help you to take the rug outdoors and shake it off.
-
Vacuuming it gently is also fine.
-
Finally, you can take it to a leather specialist who knows how to clean leathers and hides.
Genuine cowhide rugs are generally durable, but like any item it is susceptible to wear and tear after some time.
While most rugs will last a lifetime, it is always good to know what you can do in case you see some signs of deterioration.
