Shou Sugi Ban 焼 杉 板

Over the years, I have been looking for new effects for my own interiors but also for my clients and one of my favorite techniques for wood comes from Japan.

It is called Shou Sugi Ban 焼 杉 板 - or Yakisugi - is an ancient Japanese exterior siding technique that preserves wood by charring it. Traditionally, Sugi, - Cryptomeria japonica or Cupressus japonica L.f - commonly called Japanese Cedar, was used. It is still a popular tradition in the Okayama Prefecture of Japan.

When I am working in the UK or in France on projects, I don't use Japanese cedar but species of wood like English Chestnut, Red Cedar, Cyprus, Pine or Oak. The charred wood presents an incredible richness and a sumptuous silvery finish. It also resists to fire, rot, insects, and can last for more than fifty years.

The overall process involves:

- charring the wood

- cooling it

- cleaning it

- finishing it with a natural oil.

I agree it is a long and time consuming process, HOWEVER the final product is so gorgeous, that it is worth the wait!

For bespoke stools, sides tables, sculptures made with that technique (in the UK), don't hesitate to contact me directly: urszula@fifidelyon.com

Bon week-end! x
