It’s official, ‘Ultra Violet’ has been elected as Pantone’s colour of the year for 2018.

So either you like it or not, no product, from sofas to cushions, from crockery to jewellery, will escape the tone this year.

If you are a fan of that colour, good news. For the rest of us, we will have to cope with the avalanche of ultra violet until next year, ahahaha...

Pantone writes the following about the colour of the year: PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future. Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own. Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.

Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The color is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection (Source: www.pantone.com/color-of-the-year-2018)

For the world of interior design it is a great pick. As with any intense colour, ultra violet makes a great accent. It’s the perfect pick-me-up for any existing grey scheme, for example, and sits well with darker shades such as navy or teal.

For 19 years, Pantone’s Colour of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings and industrial design. With the world looking to the company for palette leadership, the selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. Experts at the Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new influences, which can include films in production, traveling art collections, fashion, textures, social media platforms – and even upcoming international sporting events. “The Pantone Colour of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design,” says Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “As individuals around the world become more fascinated with colour and realise its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use colour to inspire and influence.”

Used cleverly, ultra violet can look pretty as well as energetic in your interiors. All you need is to get the right does, really... If you are unsure about it but love the colour, contact me to get some help!
